BEng Engineering
About this course
Engineering is the discipline of applying scientific and mathematical principles to design, build and improve the systems, structures and technologies that shape the world. It encompasses mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, materials and many other specialisms, but all share a common foundation: the ability to identify a problem, apply rigorous analysis and devise a workable solution. Engineers are responsible for some of the most consequential work in human society, from the bridges people cross to the energy systems that power homes and the medical devices that sustain life. At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad. The foundation year provides the essential grounding in mathematics, physics and engineering principles needed before you progress to the full degree, making the programme accessible to students who need to build or consolidate their scientific foundation before tackling engineering at degree level. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study engineering in a different academic and industrial environment, which is genuinely valuable in a discipline that operates globally and where different countries have different engineering traditions and sectors of particular strength. You will study the core engineering sciences and develop practical and design skills through laboratory work and projects. The ability to apply theory to real problems, work methodically and communicate technical ideas clearly is developed throughout the programme. Bangor's location in North Wales provides proximity to engineering activity in renewable energy, infrastructure, marine industries and advanced manufacturing. Graduates go on to careers across engineering sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, aerospace, automotive, marine and construction, as well as in consultancy, management and the public sector. Many pursue professional qualification with engineering institutions as chartered engineers. Postgraduate study in specialist engineering disciplines is available for those who want to develop deeper technical expertise.
