BA Geography
About this course
Geography as a discipline occupies a distinctive position in the academy, spanning the natural and social sciences and addressing some of the most urgent questions of our time: how climate change is reshaping landscapes and human communities, how migration and urbanisation are transforming cities, how artificial intelligence and digital technology are reconfiguring economic geographies, and how inequality is produced and reproduced across places and scales. Geographers are trained to think across these different registers, to work with spatial data and fieldwork evidence, and to engage with problems that resist simple disciplinary boundaries. At Queen Mary University of London, this four-year full-time Geography degree develops the skills needed to understand and respond to the accelerating changes affecting people and the planet. You will study both human and physical geography, developing competence in geographical methods, including GIS, fieldwork, and quantitative and qualitative research, alongside substantive engagement with topics ranging from environmental change and urban development to political geography and the social dimensions of technology. The programme draws on the particular intellectual and urban context that London provides, with the city itself serving as a living field site for many areas of geographical enquiry. Geography graduates are consistently in strong demand in the labour market, partly because the subject develops a combination of analytical, technical, and communication skills that translate across many sectors. Environmental consultancy, urban planning, geographic information and mapping services, international development, public health, the civil service, climate and sustainability roles, and data-driven research positions are all well-established career destinations. The four-year programme structure at QMUL allows for greater depth of study than a standard three-year degree. Postgraduate study in human geography, physical geography, environmental science, urban planning, or related disciplines is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
