About this course

Psychology in education investigates the psychological processes that underpin learning, development and behaviour in educational settings, and applies that understanding to improving the quality of education and the wellbeing of learners. It is a degree that bridges psychology and education, asking how children develop cognitively and emotionally, how motivation and learning are related, how individual differences in ability and personality affect educational outcomes, and how schools and teachers can create the conditions in which all children can thrive. At Liverpool Hope University, the three-year full-time BSc is designed for students who want to combine the scientific rigour of psychology with a deep understanding of educational contexts. You will study cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, educational neuroscience, theories of learning and motivation, the psychology of behaviour management, and the assessment and support of children with special educational needs and disabilities. The degree develops both your theoretical understanding and your ability to apply psychological knowledge in real educational settings. It includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience and international perspectives before graduation. Demand for professionals who understand the psychology of learning continues to grow, both in educational psychology as a clinical profession and in a wider range of roles in schools, local authorities and educational research organisations. Graduates work in educational support roles, SEND coordination, school psychology services, educational research, teaching, family support and social care. Many go on to postgraduate study in educational psychology, which is required for practice as a Registered Educational Psychologist, or in related fields such as counselling, clinical psychology or special educational needs.
