AI EXPOSURE TODAY is a Careermash index from 0 to 100 of how exposed this job's everyday tasks are to AI today. We estimate it by matching published research on how people use AI to this job, usually by keyword or subject area, and we lower it where the work is protected (for example by physical, personal or legal requirements). It is not a direct measurement of how much people in this job use AI.

AI exposure is high for this work
AI exposure today for this job is high on our index (52). We have not yet classified what, if anything, structurally protects it, so we make no claim either way about a moat. Learn the tools, and build the judgement that stays human.

The role

As a debt and rent collector, you contact people and businesses to collect money that's owed. You'll be dealing with people who are stressed about their finances, so you need to be calm, fair and willing to listen. The job is not just about getting the money back - it's about understanding why someone can't pay and finding a way forward that works for them.

Your day involves phone calls, emails and sometimes letters. You'll review accounts, work out what someone can actually afford to pay, and agree a payment plan with them. You need to keep careful records, follow the law, and know when to hand a case over to lawyers. The work needs patience, honesty and the ability to stay professional even when a conversation gets difficult.

Daily responsibilities

  • Review and manage outstanding debts and payment agreements.
  • Contact clients via phone, email, or in-person to negotiate repayment plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of all interactions and transactions in the database.
  • Prepare and send out notices for overdue payments and legal actions when necessary.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of clients' financial situations to tailor collection strategies.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to pursue formal recovery actions when needed.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws and regulations regarding debt collection practices.
  • Provide excellent customer service to maintain positive relationships with clients.
