AI EXPOSURE TODAY is a Careermash index from 0 to 100 of how exposed this job's everyday tasks are to AI today. We estimate it by matching published research on how people use AI to this job, usually by keyword or subject area, and we lower it where the work is protected (for example by physical, personal or legal requirements). It is not a direct measurement of how much people in this job use AI.

This job holds up well against AI
AI exposure today is modest on our index (30), and the law requires human oversight. That human could be you. That is about as safe as careers get right now, though it is still worth learning to use the tools well.

The role

As a garage manager or proprietor, you run a garage where cars are repaired and serviced. You manage mechanics and support staff, handle customer problems and complaints, and make sure every car that leaves your garage is safe and fixed properly. You also look after the money - budgeting, tracking costs, ordering parts, and checking that the business is making profit.

Your day might involve greeting customers, solving problems when a repair takes longer than expected, training new technicians, or working out whether to buy new equipment. As electric cars become more common, you need to keep learning new technology. You work with your hands sometimes, manage people carefully, and understand that customers depend on you to keep their cars running safely.

Daily responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the garage, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality service.
  • Manage a team of technicians and support staff, providing training and mentorship.
  • Handle customer inquiries and complaints, ensuring satisfaction and building long-term relationships.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies, ensuring timely ordering and stock management.
  • Implement health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for staff and customers.
  • Monitor financial performance, including budgeting, cost control, and profitability analysis.
  • Develop marketing strategies to attract new customers and retain existing ones.
  • Stay updated on automotive technology trends and advancements to offer the best services.
