THE DOOR: ENTRY DIFFICULTY TODAY, graded A (easy) to E (extremely hard). A Careermash rule-of-thumb index built from our AI exposure index and the job's moat class. It is not a forecast and not a count of job openings.

AI EXPOSURE TODAY is a Careermash index from 0 to 100 of how exposed this job's everyday tasks are to AI today. We estimate it by matching published research on how people use AI to this job, usually by keyword or subject area, and we lower it where the work is protected (for example by physical, personal or legal requirements). It is not a direct measurement of how much people in this job use AI.

AI exposure is low for this work today
AI exposure today for this job is low on our index (6), an estimate rather than a measurement. We have not yet classified what, if anything, structurally protects it, so we make no claim either way about a moat. Learn the tools, and build the judgement that stays human.

The role

As a specialist medical consultant, you will be an expert in your chosen area of medicine - maybe cardiology, oncology, paediatrics or something else. People come to you when they have complex health problems that need specialist care. You will examine patients, look at test results, make diagnoses, and decide on treatment plans.

Your day involves seeing patients in clinic, reviewing their case notes and test results carefully, and sometimes doing procedures. You will also work with other doctors and nurses in the hospital team, teach junior doctors what you know, and stay up to date with the latest research. Some days are quiet, others are very busy - it depends on emergencies and how many patients need your help.

Daily responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and evaluations of patients' medical histories and current health conditions.
  • Develop and implement tailored treatment plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Perform complex medical procedures and interventions as required by patient needs.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through research, training, and attending medical conferences.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with medical regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, ensuring they understand treatment options and care processes.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.
