Massage Therapist
What you'd actually do
The work is consulting clients about their needs, carrying out massage treatments, advising on aftercare and keeping the room clean and welcoming. Good technique, physical stamina in your hands and arms, and a calm, professional and reassuring manner matter, since clients are relaxing and trusting you with their body.
You will work in spas, salons, clinics, gyms or for yourself, often including evenings and weekends, with pay that starts modestly and rises with skill, reputation and tips. The work is physically demanding over a full day, and many therapists go self-employed and build a loyal client base.
You will need a recognised massage qualification, usually through a college course, plus insurance, and you should follow hygiene and professional standards. Specialist areas like sports or clinical massage need further training, and good results bring repeat clients.
