About this course

Accounting and finance is the discipline at the core of how organisations, governments and individuals manage money, make investment decisions and account for their financial activities. Accounting provides the systems and standards by which financial information is recorded, reported and audited, while finance addresses how capital is raised, allocated and managed to create value. Together, they form the foundation of professional life across the commercial, public and not-for-profit sectors, and a degree in this area opens pathways into some of the most structured and well-supported graduate careers available.

At London South Bank University, this five-year programme is designed for students who are passionate about working in business but who benefit from a more gradual entry into university-level study. The programme includes a foundation element that builds the mathematical, analytical and academic skills needed to succeed on the main degree before progressing into the core accounting and finance curriculum. A placement year is also incorporated, giving you the opportunity to gain substantial professional experience in an accounting, finance or business environment, directly applying what you have studied in a real workplace context.

Graduates in accounting and finance are well placed for careers in professional accountancy firms, audit practices, corporate finance departments, investment management, banking, financial services and the finance functions of organisations across every sector. Many graduates pursue professional accountancy qualifications alongside or after their degree, which can be accelerated where the degree has covered relevant content. The practical experience gained through the placement year further strengthens your employability and professional network.

Further study at postgraduate level in accounting, finance, taxation or business administration is also a common route for those seeking senior roles or greater specialisation.
