About this course

Accounting is the formal language of business, the system through which organisations record what they own, what they owe, what they earn, and what they spend. It is a discipline grounded in precision and structured thinking, but it also involves significant professional judgement, ethical responsibility, and the ability to communicate complex financial information to a range of audiences. At degree level, accounting encompasses not only the technical skills of financial reporting but also the broader frameworks of audit, taxation, management accounting, corporate governance, and financial analysis.

At Cardiff University, part of the Russell Group and one of Wales's leading research institutions, this three-year full-time programme offers accounting education of high academic quality. Cardiff's business school has strong connections with the accounting profession and with major employers in Wales and beyond, and the programme is designed to prepare you for professional qualification while also developing the broader analytical and commercial understanding that distinguishes the best accounting graduates. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the competitive nature of the programme at a research-intensive institution.

You will study financial accounting, management accounting, corporate reporting, audit and assurance, business law, taxation, and the theoretical and ethical dimensions of the profession, building both technical competence and professional readiness.

Accounting graduates from strong institutions like Cardiff are consistently in demand. Many go on to pursue professional qualifications with the ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA, or ICAS, and a good accounting degree from a respected university typically provides exemptions from some of the early-stage professional examinations. Careers in public practice, audit, tax, corporate finance, management accounting, financial analysis, and the public sector are all well within reach.

Some graduates move into commercial finance or banking, while others pursue postgraduate study in accounting, finance, or business to develop specialist expertise or move into research and academic careers.

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city …

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city i…
