About this course

Accounting is the discipline through which organisations understand their financial position, communicate their performance to the world, and make the decisions that determine their future. Far more than a technical exercise in recording transactions, it is a language of accountability, a framework for ethical decision-making, and a lens through which strategy, risk, regulation and sustainability can all be examined. Every significant question an organisation faces, from how to allocate resources to how to respond to environmental obligations, has an accounting dimension.

At Essex Business School you will study the conceptual and practical foundations of accounting alongside the broader business, ethical and social contexts in which it operates. You will explore financial reporting and management accounting, auditing, taxation, and the legal and regulatory environment that shapes accounting practice. The programme encourages you to move beyond a purely transactional view, considering how accounting information influences decision-making, creates accountability between organisations and their stakeholders, and contributes to sound and ethical commercial practice.

The course runs over three years full time.

Accounting graduates are in high demand across virtually every sector. Many progress towards professional qualifications with bodies such as the ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA, taking advantage of exemptions earned through the degree to accelerate their route to chartered status. Careers span public practice, corporate finance, internal audit, management accounting, financial analysis, tax, and roles in the public sector and third sector where financial accountability is equally important.

Others move into general management, consulting or entrepreneurship, where the financial literacy and analytical rigour the degree develops are consistently valued.
