Accounting
Accounting is the language through which organisations record, report, and understand their financial activities. It provides the information that enables investors, lenders, managers, employees, governments, and the public to make decisions about how resources are allocated, how performance is measured, and how accountability is maintained. Studying accounting at degree level develops not only technical competence in financial reporting and analysis but also the analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that accounting professionals use across every sector of the economy.
At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this two-year programme develops your understanding of accounting principles and practice through a curriculum that balances theoretical grounding with practical application. You will study the preparation and presentation of financial statements, management accounting, taxation, audit principles, and the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern accounting practice. The programme is delivered through a combination of scheduled classes and independent study, developing the self-directed learning habits that are important in a profession where continuous learning and updating of knowledge are expected throughout a career.

Graduates from accounting programmes are well placed to begin careers in accountancy practice, financial management, and business roles across many sectors. Many pursue professional qualifications with bodies such as ICAS, ACCA, CIMA, or AAT, and an accounting degree can provide partial exemptions from elements of those qualification routes. Others move into finance, audit, tax, payroll, and financial operations roles in organisations of all kinds.
