About this course

Accounting with Finance is a degree that prepares you for two of the most central functions in any organisation. Accounting provides the systems and discipline through which financial information is recorded, reported, and audited, making it possible for organisations to be transparent and accountable. Finance extends that foundation to encompass investment, capital markets, financial analysis, and the broader discipline of how money is raised, deployed, and managed.

Together they give you the technical skills and the commercial understanding that employers across industries require.

At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities and a year abroad, giving you structured professional experience alongside an international perspective. You will study financial and management accounting, corporate finance, taxation, auditing, and investment alongside the analytical and quantitative methods that underpin financial practice. The degree is designed with professional qualification in mind, and modules are structured to provide maximum exemptions from the examinations of major bodies such as the ICAEW, ACCA, and CIMA, reducing the time and cost of qualifying after graduation.

Accounting and Finance graduates are among the most consistently sought-after in the UK graduate market. Chartered accountancy in public practice, corporate finance, financial analysis, investment management, banking, and management consultancy are all well-trodden career paths. The sandwich year gives you a significant head start in the professional environment.

The year abroad is unusual for this degree type and adds an international dimension that is increasingly valued by global employers. Many graduates complete their professional qualifications within a few years of graduation, after which career progression and earning potential are strong across a wide range of organisations and sectors.
