About this course

Actuarial mathematics is the discipline of applying advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to the assessment and management of financial risk, and actuaries are the people providing those insights that underpin business strategy across any industry. The work of actuaries touches insurance pricing, pension fund management, healthcare financing, and the modelling of large-scale risks, and the profession is consistently ranked among the most intellectually demanding and financially rewarding in the graduate labour market.

At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme gives you a rigorous grounding in the mathematics and statistical theory underpinning actuarial work alongside the financial and business knowledge needed to apply it in professional contexts. You will develop expertise in probability, statistical inference, financial mathematics, and the mathematical modelling of uncertain events, building progressively towards the technical depth required for the professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The sandwich year placement and work placement opportunities are an important feature of the programme, giving you professional experience in an actuarial or financial environment before you graduate.

The year abroad option is also available for those who want to develop an international perspective on financial risk and mathematics.

Actuarial mathematics graduates are in strong demand across insurance, pensions, investment management, financial regulation, and risk consultancy. Many graduates enter actuarial trainee positions and continue working towards full Fellowship qualification alongside employment. Others use the strong quantitative skills they have developed to move into data science, quantitative finance, financial modelling, or risk management roles in a wider range of organisations.

Postgraduate study in actuarial science, statistics, or financial mathematics is an option for those who want to pursue research.

Exceeded expectations
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant stude…

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the ci…
