Adult Nursing
Adult nursing is one of the most demanding and most rewarding career paths in health and social care, requiring a sophisticated combination of clinical knowledge, practical skill, empathy, and professional judgement. At London South Bank University, the BSc Adult Nursing is a three-year full-time programme that includes a foundation year, providing preparatory support for students who benefit from an additional stage before entering the main degree. The university has dedicated clinical skills facilities, including nursing skills laboratories configured to simulate real ward environments, where you develop practical competencies in manual handling, basic life support, and nursing-specific skills in a safe and supervised setting.
Throughout the programme you will develop the knowledge base that registered nurses require across the range of adult healthcare settings: physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and the evidence base for nursing interventions are all essential components. You will also develop the relational and communicative skills that good nursing depends on, including the ability to assess patient needs, communicate clearly with patients and families in difficult circumstances, work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and practise with the ethical awareness and professional accountability that the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires. Clinical placements are a central part of the programme, taking you into hospitals and community health settings where you learn to apply your academic knowledge in real healthcare environments under professional supervision.
Registered Nurses qualified in adult nursing are employed across the full range of NHS and independent healthcare settings, including hospitals, community services, care homes, mental health services, and specialist centres. Nursing is a regulated profession in the UK, and completion of an approved programme leads to eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is the entry point for practice. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, specialist nursing, nurse prescribing, or nursing research.
Others progress into nursing leadership, education, or management roles. The programme's emphasis on practical skill development from the foundation year onwards is designed to produce graduates who are ready to practise safely and confidently from the point of registration.
