Adult Nursing
Adult nursing is one of the most directly impactful professions in the healthcare system. Adult nurses care for people across the full age range from young adults to older people, in settings that span hospital wards and intensive care units, community clinics, GP practices, care homes, and patients' own homes. The role requires both clinical competence and the human skills of communication, empathy, and professional judgement, working with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to plan and deliver care.
At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time degree leads to a BSc (Hons) and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme combines theoretical study at the university with clinical placements in a range of care settings, ensuring that your learning is tested and deepened in real healthcare environments throughout your training. You will build a strong foundation in adult nursing theory and clinical skills, and you will be introduced to diverse care contexts that reflect the changing patterns of how healthcare is delivered.
The programme also includes Mental Health First Aid training, recognising that mental and physical health are closely intertwined in the people you will care for. The combination of academic and practice-based learning is designed to produce nurses who are not only technically proficient but also thoughtful, person-centred practitioners. With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, the course is available to students from a range of backgrounds.
Registration as an adult nurse opens a wide range of career paths. The NHS provides the majority of nursing employment, across hospital settings, community services, and specialist clinical areas, but private healthcare, the armed forces, independent care providers, and international healthcare systems also employ registered nurses. With experience, nurses progress into specialist clinical roles, advanced nursing practice, management and leadership, and education.
Further study routes include postgraduate specialist qualifications and, for those interested in research, masters and doctoral programmes in nursing and health sciences.
