About this course

Aerospace engineering applies scientific and engineering principles to the design, development, and operation of aircraft, spacecraft, and the systems that support them. It is a discipline at the frontier of human technical achievement, demanding rigorous understanding of aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, avionics, and materials alongside the systems engineering knowledge needed to integrate these into complex, high-performance vehicles. As the aerospace sector faces urgent pressure to decarbonise, to develop alternative propulsion technologies, and to reduce noise and environmental impact, aerospace engineers are central to one of the most consequential engineering challenges of the coming decades.

At Queen's University Belfast this five-year full-time undergraduate masters programme provides a thorough and rigorous grounding in aerospace engineering at the masters level. You will develop expertise in the core technical disciplines of the field, including aerodynamics, flight mechanics, structural analysis, propulsion systems, and avionics, alongside the systems integration and project management skills that professional aerospace engineering requires. The sandwich year provides structured professional experience within the aerospace or a related engineering industry, allowing you to apply your technical knowledge in a real organisation and develop the professional skills and industry connections that accelerate graduate careers.

The masters-level qualification distinguishes this programme from a standard BEng, providing a more advanced technical grounding and greater depth of research and analytical training.

Graduates move into careers in aircraft design and manufacturing, defence aerospace, spacecraft and satellite systems, propulsion research, aerodynamics consultancy, and air traffic management. Many go on to work towards chartered engineer status through professional institutions such as the Royal Aeronautical Society. Others continue to doctoral research in aerospace engineering or related fields.
