About this course

Aerospace engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, development, testing, and production of aircraft, spacecraft, and the systems that make flight possible. It draws on the fundamental principles of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, materials science, and control theory, applying them to objects that must perform reliably in some of the most extreme conditions that engineering has to manage. The aerospace sector encompasses commercial aviation, defence, space exploration, satellites, unmanned systems, and increasingly the emerging field of urban air mobility, making it one of the most varied and technically demanding areas of engineering practice.

At the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, you will study Aerospace Engineering over three years, full time. Newcastle has a strong tradition in engineering education and research, with connections to the aerospace and defence industries of the North East and beyond. You will develop knowledge of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, structural analysis, materials, avionics, and the systems engineering approaches used to manage the complexity of aerospace vehicles and programmes.

The degree builds both the analytical and mathematical foundations of aerospace science and the practical design and computational skills that employers in the sector look for. You will work on design projects that develop your ability to integrate knowledge from different parts of the curriculum and to make engineering decisions under realistic constraints.

Graduates of aerospace engineering programmes work in commercial and defence aerospace, space agencies, satellite companies, aviation authorities, and engineering consultancies. The discipline provides an excellent foundation for careers in related engineering fields including mechanical, systems, and software engineering, and many roles in the sector value the breadth of aerospace training. Further study options include postgraduate master's and doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering, aeronautics, and related fields, and the degree provides a route towards chartered engineer status with the Royal Aeronautical Society and other professional bodies.
