About this course

Aerospace engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, building and maintaining the aircraft and spacecraft that have transformed transport and our understanding of the universe. It draws on fluid mechanics, structural engineering, materials science, thermodynamics, control systems and avionics to meet the extraordinary demands of operating at high speed, high altitude and in the vacuum of space. As the aviation industry pursues decarbonisation and the space sector expands rapidly, aerospace engineers are central to the technological transitions required.

At Teesside University the programme includes a foundation year that builds your mathematical and scientific foundations, alongside an introduction to the design process, engineering drawing, simulation and modelling. Across the full four years full time, you will develop expertise in the principles and applications of aerospace engineering, working with design, modelling and simulation tools that reflect professional practice. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, giving you direct experience of engineering in a professional aerospace context alongside your academic qualification.

Aerospace engineering graduates work in aircraft and spacecraft design, systems integration, propulsion, structures, aerodynamics, avionics and manufacturing, for major aerospace companies, defence contractors, airlines, space agencies and engineering consultancies. Graduate engineers typically pursue chartered status through professional engineering institutions, a key milestone in career development. The skills in analysis, design and problem-solving that the degree develops also transfer into adjacent fields including automotive engineering, defence technology, offshore energy and advanced manufacturing.

Postgraduate study in aerospace systems, computational fluid dynamics or structural engineering is a route for those seeking specialist or research-focused careers.
