Agriculture
Agriculture is one of humanity's oldest and most essential activities, concerned with the cultivation of crops and the rearing of livestock to produce food, fibre, and other commodities. As a university discipline it encompasses the biological science of plant and animal production, the technology of farm machinery and systems, the economics and business management of agricultural enterprises, and the environmental dimensions of how farming interacts with ecosystems, water, soil, and climate. The challenges facing agriculture in the twenty-first century, including feeding a growing global population sustainably while adapting to climate change, make it one of the most important fields of study and practice.
At Anglia Ruskin University, this programme can be studied either over three years in a standard mode or over a part-time basis spanning four or six years, covering the same modules as BSc students but sometimes in a different sequence. This flexibility allows those with farming or agricultural work commitments, or other responsibilities, to develop professional-level agricultural knowledge while continuing their work. You will study the science of soil, plant, and animal production, alongside the environmental, economic, and policy dimensions of contemporary agriculture.
The programme develops both the theoretical understanding and the practical knowledge that agricultural careers require.
You will engage with crop and livestock husbandry, agricultural systems, environmental management, food supply chains, and the business management skills needed to run a farm or related enterprise effectively.
Graduates go on to work in farm management, agricultural consultancy, the agri-food industry, rural surveying, environmental management, policy, and research. The combination of scientific knowledge and practical skills the degree develops is valued across the food, farming, and rural sector. Postgraduate study in agricultural science, environmental management, or food science is an option for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
