American Studies

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that takes the United States as its primary subject of inquiry, examining its history, literature, culture, politics, and society through multiple lenses. It recognises that no single academic discipline captures the complexity of a nation of such scale and significance, so it draws on literary criticism, historiography, cultural studies, political science, and social theory to build a textured understanding of American experience. Crucially, the field takes seriously the contested nature of that experience, attending to race, gender, class, immigration, and the gap between American ideals and American realities.

At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme engages with seminal historical events, literature, film, and music, examining how American culture has developed and how it continues to project influence globally. You will read some of the major texts of American literature alongside studying civil liberties struggles, foreign policy, and the politics of race and gender, developing both close reading skills and a broad contextual understanding of the United States from its colonial origins to the present. UEA has a distinguished record in both literature and history, and the American Studies degree draws on the strengths of both.

You will develop strong analytical, research, and writing skills, the capacity to work across disciplinary frameworks, and a deep critical understanding of a society that has shaped and continues to shape the wider world.

Graduates find these skills valuable across a wide range of careers. Common pathways include journalism, publishing, teaching, public relations, the civil service and public policy, international relations, law, and the cultural sector. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in American history, literature, politics, or cultural studies.

The degree is also a strong foundation for careers in organisations that engage with the United States at a governmental, commercial, or cultural level.
