Ancient History

Ancient history is the study of human civilisation from the earliest written records to the late antique period, with a particular focus on the societies of Greece and Rome that have shaped Western culture so profoundly. It is a discipline that combines rigorous textual analysis of ancient sources with archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and the study of material culture, asking not only what happened in the ancient world but how we know, and what the process of historical interpretation reveals about the distance between past and present.

At the University of Leeds this three-year, full-time programme takes you across the civilisations of ancient Greece, Rome, Persia, and beyond, analysing their political, cultural, and social histories. You will study how ancient societies have been received and interpreted by later cultures, from the Renaissance to the present day, and how the discipline of ancient history itself has evolved over time. The programme develops your ability to read ancient sources critically, to work with physical evidence, and to construct sustained historical arguments in clear, precise prose.
