Ancient History/Celtic Civilisation

Ancient history and Celtic civilisation is a combination that places two very different but equally fascinating ancient cultures in dialogue. Ancient history examines Greece, Rome, and the wider Mediterranean world from the eighth century BC to the fifth century AD, studying the political institutions, literature, religion, warfare, philosophy, and material culture of civilisations that shaped the entire subsequent development of European thought and society. Celtic civilisation explores the languages, cultures, art, and social organisation of the Celtic peoples of Iron Age Europe and their descendants in the British Isles, including the rich traditions of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales that survived the Roman world and left deep marks on medieval literature and culture.

At the University of Glasgow, this part-time degree allows you to pursue both fields alongside other commitments. Glasgow has particular strengths in both classical scholarship and in Celtic studies, with specialist staff in ancient history and in the Celtic languages and their literatures. You will examine the history and culture of the ancient Mediterranean alongside the archaeology, literature, and traditions of the Celtic world, developing skills in primary source analysis, historical argument, and cultural interpretation that apply across both fields.

The degree includes the opportunity to learn Latin and ancient Greek if you wish to engage with the primary sources directly. A year abroad is available as part of the programme.

Graduates of ancient history and Celtic civilisation go on to careers in heritage, museums, archives, education, journalism, the cultural sector, and academic research. The rigorous textual and historical analysis skills developed through the programme transfer effectively into law, the civil service, publishing, and a wide range of other professional environments. Academic careers in either ancient history or Celtic studies require postgraduate study, and the combination provides a distinctive and intellectually serious platform for doctoral research.
