Ancient History/History
Ancient history and history is a combination that gives you the tools to trace human experience from the earliest civilisations of Greece, Rome, and the ancient Mediterranean through to the recent past. Ancient history focuses on the cultures and events of antiquity, from roughly the eighth century BC to the fifth century AD, drawing on the literary, epigraphic, numismatic, and archaeological record to reconstruct worlds that are at once remote and surprisingly present in our own institutions, literature, and ways of thinking. History broadens this temporal scope, developing your ability to work with a wider range of periods, places, and types of evidence.
At the University of Glasgow, you will study ancient history, including the history and culture of Greece, Rome, and the wider Mediterranean, with the opportunity to learn Latin and ancient Greek if you wish. The programme runs for four years full time, which in the Scottish tradition provides time for breadth in the early years before more intensive specialisation later. It includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study at a partner institution in another country and to engage with historical scholarship in a different academic environment.

You will develop skills in reading and interpreting diverse sources, constructing historical arguments, and writing clearly about complex causal and interpretive questions. Both ancient history and modern history share a commitment to rigorous engagement with evidence and to the understanding that the past is always constructed through the questions we bring to it.
Graduates from this combination move into careers in education, the civil service, journalism, heritage and archive work, publishing, law, and a wide range of roles where research, writing, and analytical thinking are valued. Some continue to postgraduate study in ancient history, medieval or modern history, or classical studies, and others move directly into professional training routes.
