Ancient History/Philosophy

Ancient history and philosophy is a pairing of remarkable intellectual depth. Ancient history immerses you in the study of Greece, Rome, and the wider Mediterranean world from the eighth century BC to the fifth century AD, engaging with the political structures, military campaigns, social organisations, religious practices, and cultural achievements of civilisations that continue to shape the world we inhabit. Philosophy at its origins is inseparable from the ancient world: Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and the Epicureans all developed frameworks of thought that remain central to philosophical inquiry today.

Studying both together means engaging with primary sources, ideas, and arguments in a way that is genuinely historical and genuinely philosophical at once.

At the University of Glasgow this programme is studied on a part-time basis, allowing you to develop your expertise at a pace that fits around other commitments. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and to deepen your engagement with classical traditions from a fresh vantage point. You will have the opportunity to learn Latin and ancient Greek if you wish, which opens direct access to primary texts and is a significant intellectual achievement in itself.
