Animal Management

Animal management with a focus on pet behaviour and welfare is a specialist applied discipline concerned with understanding how companion animals think, communicate, and experience the world, and with using that understanding to improve their lives. It draws on ethology, animal psychology, veterinary science, and the growing body of research on animal cognition to develop evidence-based approaches to behaviour assessment, modification, and welfare management. The companion animal sector is large and professionally diverse, and the demand for qualified specialists in pet behaviour and welfare is increasing.

At Anglia Ruskin University this three-year, full-time programme gives you a grounding in animal behaviour, welfare science, and management practice. You will study the natural behaviour of common companion species, the causes and management of behavioural problems, the welfare needs of animals in different settings, and the practical skills needed to work professionally with animals and their owners. The programme develops both your scientific understanding and your ability to communicate complex information to pet owners, veterinary professionals, and other stakeholders.

Anglia Ruskin also offers flexible entry options, including a Certificate of Higher Education after the first year, making the programme accessible to students with different ambitions and timelines.

Graduates of this programme go on to careers as animal behaviour consultants, welfare officers, kennel and cattery managers, pet care professionals, rescue and rehoming workers, and in roles within the veterinary sector, local authorities, charities, and the pet industry. Many graduates go on to work with the RSPCA, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection, and other major animal welfare organisations. Others build careers in veterinary practices, animal training, dog walking and grooming businesses, or in pet insurance and related commercial roles.
