Anthropology with Placements

Anthropology is the study of what it means to be human, examined from every angle: biological, social, cultural, and linguistic. It is one of the most genuinely broad of the social sciences, capable of illuminating everything from kinship structures in small-scale societies to the cultural dynamics of global cities, from the evolutionary origins of human behaviour to the politics of identity in contemporary states. What makes anthropology distinctive is its commitment to understanding human experience from the inside, taking seriously how people understand and navigate their own worlds rather than simply imposing external categories on them.

At Brunel University London, you will study the core areas of anthropological theory and method over four years full-time, engaging with ethnographic research, comparative analysis, and the major debates in social and cultural anthropology. You will develop a critical awareness of how culture, power, inequality, and identity shape human life in different contexts, and you will build skills in qualitative research, including fieldwork methods that are central to the discipline. The programme includes placements, which give you the opportunity to apply your anthropological thinking in a professional context before you graduate, and to build the practical experience that employers value alongside academic knowledge.

Anthropology graduates are well prepared for careers in international development, humanitarian organisations, public health, education, policy research, social work, journalism, human resources, and the cultural sector. The ability to understand diverse perspectives, conduct qualitative research, and communicate clearly about complex social phenomena is valued by organisations working across different communities and international contexts. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in anthropology, development studies, social policy, or area studies.
