About this course

Applied animal science is the study of animals in the contexts in which they actually matter to human life: as livestock in agriculture, as companion animals, as wild species in managed ecosystems, and as subjects of scientific research into physiology, behaviour, and welfare. It combines biology, physiology, nutrition, genetics, and behavioural science with the practical dimensions of animal management and the ethical considerations that govern how we treat the animals in our care. The discipline has become increasingly important as society demands higher standards of animal welfare, more sustainable animal production systems, and a better scientific understanding of the species with which we share the world.

At Harper Adams University this five-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides a supported entry point for students who need additional academic preparation before engaging with degree-level content. The foundation year develops the scientific foundations and study skills needed to succeed in higher education, connecting subject knowledge to the challenges and opportunities of the modern global landscape and helping you build the resilience and self-awareness that independent learning requires.

Once you progress to the main degree, you will study animal physiology, nutrition, genetics and breeding, health and welfare, and the applied management of animal systems. Harper Adams's strong connections to the agricultural and rural industries provide a distinctive and practically engaged environment for this kind of study, and the programme prepares you for careers in sectors where the application of scientific understanding to real animals and real farms matters.

Graduates move into careers in animal nutrition, livestock production and management, veterinary and pharmaceutical industries, animal welfare organisations, research, agricultural consultancy, and roles in companion animal services. Many also continue to postgraduate study in animal science, veterinary medicine (typically requiring separate professional entry), or related fields.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a b…

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links m…
