Applied Environmental Science and Sustainability

Applied Environmental Science and Sustainability is a degree for students who want to engage seriously with the environmental challenges of the present and contribute practically to addressing them. Environmental science draws on ecology, chemistry, geology, geography, and biology to understand how natural systems function, how human activity affects them, and what can be done to mitigate that impact. Sustainability adds a policy, planning, and social dimension, asking not just what the science says but how societies, economies, and organisations can change their practices to live within environmental limits.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in both the scientific and applied dimensions of environmental work. You will study how ecosystems function, how pollutants move through environments, how climate change is altering ecological systems, and how scientific monitoring and assessment are conducted. Alongside this, you will engage with sustainability frameworks, environmental policy and regulation, environmental impact assessment, and the practical tools that organisations use to manage their environmental footprint.

The four-year structure gives you time to develop genuine depth and to integrate fieldwork and applied projects with your academic study.

You will develop strong analytical and fieldwork skills, the ability to communicate scientific findings to non-specialist audiences, and an understanding of how environmental science connects to policy, planning, and management decisions.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, regulatory agencies, local and central government environmental roles, conservation organisations, sustainability management in the private sector, and environmental monitoring and assessment. Many employers across construction, energy, transport, and food production increasingly need graduates who understand environmental impact and sustainability. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in environmental management, conservation biology, or climate change policy.
