About this course

Applied mathematics is the discipline concerned with using the tools and ideas of pure mathematics to solve real problems in science, engineering, economics, biology, medicine and many other fields. Where pure mathematics develops mathematical structures for their own sake, applied mathematics takes those structures and deploys them in the service of understanding and predicting the behaviour of the physical and social world. Differential equations model the dynamics of physical systems and biological populations; probability and statistics underpin insurance, finance and experimental science; optimisation techniques drive logistics, machine learning and operations research; and mathematical modelling provides the frameworks through which complex systems can be understood and controlled.

At Swansea University this three-year full-time BSc programme builds the mathematical foundations of analysis, algebra, calculus and statistics before developing the applied techniques that form the core of the discipline, including numerical methods, mathematical modelling, fluid dynamics, mathematical biology and the mathematical underpinnings of computing. The programme is internationally open and benefits from Swansea's research strengths in applied and computational mathematics. You will develop strong problem-solving skills and the ability to formulate, analyse and interpret mathematical models of real phenomena.

You will develop rigour in mathematical reasoning alongside the computational and modelling skills that characterise modern applied mathematics. The ability to think precisely about complex systems and to communicate mathematical arguments clearly is a highly transferable competence.

Graduates from applied mathematics programmes move into careers in financial services, actuarial work, data science, engineering, public health, scientific research, software development and government analysis. The mathematical training is also excellent preparation for postgraduate study in applied mathematics, statistics, mathematical physics, financial mathematics or a range of engineering and scientific disciplines.
