About this course

Applied sport science is the practical and evidence-based discipline that takes the science of how the human body functions during sport and exercise and applies it to improve performance, enhance health, and support athletes at every level. It draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, and sports nutrition, integrating these perspectives to understand both how the body responds to physical demands and how those responses can be systematically optimised.

At Anglia Ruskin University you will study part-time on a programme that provides a comprehensive sport science education designed to fit around existing commitments. You will explore how the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems adapt to training and fatigue, examine how movement mechanics influence performance and injury risk, and consider the psychological factors that shape motivation, focus, and wellbeing in sporting contexts. The applied focus of the degree means that theoretical knowledge is consistently connected to practical professional application: you will learn to evaluate athletes' physical responses, design training programmes, conduct fitness assessments, and interpret data from sport science testing.

This practical orientation prepares you to work directly with athletes, coaches, and organisations rather than only in research settings.

Graduates of applied sport science work in professional sport as sport scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, and performance analysts working with teams and individual athletes. Roles in exercise physiology in NHS or private health settings, health and fitness management, and community sport development are further common directions. Educational settings, including teaching physical education and delivering sport science programmes, draw on the subject knowledge the degree builds.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, or sport and exercise nutrition, deepening their specialism or acquiring the additional qualifications needed to practise at a higher level or in a clinical context.
