Arabic and Comparative Literature and French

Arabic, comparative literature and French is a combination that places three of the world's most significant literary languages at the centre of your undergraduate education. Arabic carries one of the great intellectual and literary traditions of human history, from classical poetry and philosophy to the modern Arabic novel. French opens access to a remarkable literary culture spanning Moliere, Flaubert, Proust and the rich tradition of Francophone writing across Africa, the Caribbean and beyond.

Comparative literature as a discipline asks what we can learn about storytelling, genre, translation and literary culture by reading across traditions rather than within a single one. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA programme develops your capacity to work in all three of these dimensions simultaneously.

You will develop proficiency in Arabic and French while engaging with their literary and cultural traditions in depth, and the comparative framework gives you tools to think across linguistic and cultural boundaries rather than simply studying each tradition in isolation. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you extended immersion in one or both of the language communities you are studying and significantly deepening your fluency and cultural understanding. The programme develops advanced interpretive and analytical skills alongside genuine linguistic competence.
