Arabic and German and Spanish

Studying three languages at degree level is an ambitious undertaking that builds an exceptional set of skills. Arabic, German, and Spanish are three of the world's most significant languages, each with its own literary tradition, intellectual history, and contemporary geopolitical importance. Arabic is the dominant language of the Middle East and North Africa, spoken by hundreds of millions of people and the vehicle of a rich classical and modern literary culture.

German is central to European business, politics, and intellectual life, and the language of one of the world's leading economies. Spanish spans two continents, giving access to the cultures and societies of Spain and Latin America.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree allows you to study all three languages in combination as a joint honours programme, taking Arabic alongside German and Spanish. The degree builds practical language proficiency in each, alongside cultural knowledge and the capacity for comparative analysis that studying multiple languages develops. St Andrews emphasises that Arabic, as by far the most commonly spoken language of the Middle East, offers particularly rich opportunities for comparative study across languages, literatures, cultures, histories, politics, and economics.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity for immersive experience in one or more of the language communities you are studying.

Fluency in three languages from such different linguistic families is genuinely rare and makes graduates highly sought after in international contexts.

Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, translation and interpreting, international business, law, academia, and cultural institutions. The combination of Arabic with European languages is particularly valuable for roles in Middle Eastern affairs, international relations, and any organisation operating across the Arabic-speaking world. Postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, or translation is also a common path.
