Arabic and Italian and Russian

Arabic, Italian, and Russian represent three of the world's most significant languages, and together they open access to an extraordinary range of cultural, literary, and political traditions. Arabic is the most widely spoken language of the Middle East and North Africa, carrying with it a classical tradition of philosophy, science, and literature that shaped medieval European thought, alongside a contemporary presence in some of the world's most strategically important regions. Italian connects you to one of Europe's richest cultural inheritances, from the Renaissance to contemporary cinema and design.

Russian is the language of one of the great literary traditions in world history and remains a language of significant geopolitical importance.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree combines Arabic with Italian and Russian in a joint honours programme that develops linguistic proficiency alongside deep cultural and literary knowledge across all three traditions. Arabic offers the opportunity for comparative analyses across languages, literatures, cultures, histories, and politics, making it particularly valuable when studied in combination. A year abroad is central to the programme, providing immersive experience in contexts where one or more of your languages are spoken and deepening both linguistic fluency and cultural understanding.

The combination of Arabic, Italian, and Russian is rare and genuinely distinctive on any graduate's profile. Career destinations include diplomacy, the foreign service, international business, journalism, translation and interpretation, intelligence and security roles, international development, and academic research in comparative literature, linguistics, or area studies.
