Arabic and Latin

Arabic and Latin may seem an unlikely pairing, but together they open a window onto two of the most influential linguistic and literary traditions in human history. Arabic, with its rich classical heritage and its status as the primary language of the Middle East and much of North Africa, gives access to centuries of philosophy, poetry, science, and religious thought. Latin, the foundation of the Romance languages and the administrative tongue of the Roman Empire, shaped European civilisation in ways that remain visible in law, medicine, theology, and literature to this day.

Studying them together invites you to think comparatively about how languages work, how texts carry meaning across centuries, and how ideas travel between cultures.

At St Andrews you will develop proficiency in both languages while engaging with a wide range of texts, from classical Arabic poetry and the Quran to Virgil and Cicero. You will analyse grammar, syntax, and literary style with precision, and you will also explore the historical and cultural worlds these languages inhabited. The programme runs over four years and includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in an Arabic-speaking environment and deepen your language skills in context.

This combination of linguistic rigour and cultural breadth means you will learn to read closely, argue carefully, and move between very different intellectual traditions with confidence.

The degree is particularly well suited to those who want to understand the ancient and medieval worlds not through translation but in the original words of their authors. You will develop strong analytical and research skills, alongside a rare combination of classical languages that is genuinely distinctive on any graduate application.

Graduates typically move into careers where close reading, cultural understanding, and language skills are valued: academia, translation, diplomacy, international relations, journalism, publishing, the civil service, and roles within cultural and heritage organisations. Postgraduate study in classics, Middle Eastern studies, linguistics, or area studies is a natural next step, and the programme provides an excellent foundation for it.
