Archaeology and Geography

Archaeology and geography is a combination that approaches the human and natural world from two powerful and complementary directions. Archaeology is the study of how people in the past interacted with their world through their objects, sites, monuments, and landscapes, developing skills in fieldwork, material culture analysis, and the interpretation of the physical evidence of human activity across time. Geography examines the physical and human dimensions of the Earth, from landforms and climate systems to population, economic development, and the relationships between people and their environments.

Together, the two disciplines give you the tools to understand how landscapes have been shaped and inhabited across time.

At the University of Nottingham, this three-year full-time programme develops your skills in both disciplines with genuine depth. You will engage with archaeological theory and field methods alongside geographical analysis of both physical and human environments, developing the research, analytical, and spatial thinking skills that both subjects demand. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placements, giving you professional experience in archaeological, environmental, or geographical settings and international academic exposure that broadens your perspective on how landscapes and societies interact.

Graduates from this combination go on to careers in field archaeology, environmental consultancy, heritage management, conservation, planning, geographical information systems, and public policy on land use and environment. The combination of fieldwork skills, spatial thinking, and historical understanding also opens pathways in cartography, remote sensing, landscape architecture, and academic research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in archaeology, geography, environmental management, or heritage studies, deepening their expertise for specialist professional or academic careers.
