Archaeology & Palaeoecology
Archaeology and palaeoecology is a scientific combination that examines the human past and the natural environments within which it unfolded. Archaeology investigates what people made, built, and left behind, using artefacts, monuments, settlements, and landscapes to reconstruct how societies developed and adapted across different periods and places. Palaeoecology studies past environments through biological and geological evidence, including pollen, seeds, insects, and sediments, to reconstruct how ecosystems, climates, and vegetation changed over time.
Together they give you the tools to understand not just what people did but the environmental context in which they did it.
At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year full-time programme examines the human past from a scientific perspective, with a strong emphasis on hands-on experience with archaeological material and fieldwork. You will study world, European, and Irish and British archaeology across different periods, from human origins to modern times, alongside practical archaeology and heritage practice. The palaeoecological dimension adds environmental science methods, including laboratory techniques for the analysis of biological proxies that allow past environments to be reconstructed.
