Archaeology/ Spanish

Archaeology and Spanish is an unusual combination that reflects the genuinely international character of both disciplines. Archaeology recovers evidence of human life in the past through fieldwork, material analysis, and careful interpretation of physical remains, from prehistoric artefacts to the built environments of more recent centuries. Spanish, as the language of Spain and most of Latin America, opens access to one of the world's richest collections of archaeological sites and cultural histories, from pre-Columbian civilisations to the legacy of the Roman empire across the Iberian peninsula.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme develops your expertise in both fields. The archaeology strand covers theory, methods, and substantive topics ranging across different periods and regions, giving you the skills to analyse material culture and to engage with the academic debates that shape the discipline. The Spanish strand develops your language competence through study with staff who cover a wide range of topics from across the Spanish-speaking world, including native speakers who bring the diversity of Spanish and Latin American culture directly into the classroom.

The programme includes a sandwich placement year, which may involve fieldwork, a language placement, or professional experience in a related role.

Graduates of this combination go on to work in archaeology, heritage management, museums and galleries, conservation, cultural diplomacy, education, journalism, and international organisations. The Spanish language opens particular opportunities in Latin American cultural heritage, international development, and business contexts where the ability to engage with Spanish-speaking communities is valued. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in archaeology, heritage studies, Latin American studies, or Spanish, developing their expertise for academic or professional roles in these fields.
