Archaeology with Foundation Year

Archaeology is the discipline that investigates human history and prehistory through the material traces that people left behind: objects, structures, landscapes, and environmental evidence that allow us to reconstruct how societies lived, believed, traded, built, and changed across vast stretches of time. Because it does not depend on the existence of written records, archaeology can examine cultures and periods that literacy never reached, giving it a unique capacity to address the full sweep of the human past from the earliest hominins to the modern era.

At Birkbeck College, this part-time programme includes a foundation year designed to provide a supported entry point for students who want to develop the academic skills and subject knowledge needed before progressing to the main degree. Birkbeck's distinctive identity as an evening-teaching institution means this degree is accessible to students who are balancing study with work or other commitments, without compromising the rigour or depth of what you study. You will gain a broad understanding of the diversity of the human past through material culture, architecture, and landscapes, covering a time span from the earliest humans to the contemporary world.

Hands-on experience with archaeological collections, critical engagement with heritage on field trips, and direct participation in archaeological fieldwork are all part of what the programme offers.

Archaeology graduates develop skills that are valued both within and beyond the heritage sector: the ability to evaluate evidence critically, reason across complex and incomplete information, manage field and archival data, and communicate findings to expert and public audiences alike. Careers in heritage management, museums, environmental consultancy, planning, education, and cultural tourism are all accessible. Postgraduate study in archaeology, heritage studies, or ancient history provides routes to more specialised professional and research roles.
