Archaeology/Geography

Archaeology and geography are disciplines that share a common interest in how people and environments have shaped one another over time. Archaeology studies past human societies through their material remains, excavating and interpreting objects, structures, landscapes and biological traces to understand how people lived, how they organised themselves and how they interacted with the world around them. Geography, particularly in its physical and environmental dimensions, provides the scientific frameworks for understanding the landscapes, soils, climates and ecosystems within which those human stories unfolded.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme brings these disciplines together, including a year abroad that provides direct exposure to different archaeological sites, landscapes and scholarly traditions. You will study archaeological theory, excavation and survey methods, environmental archaeology, landscape analysis, geographical information systems, physical geography and the historical geography of human settlement. The combination develops both fieldwork and analytical skills, giving you practical experience of working in the landscape alongside theoretical and interpretive understanding.

You will learn to read landscapes as both physical and cultural documents, understanding how human activity has transformed environments and how environments have constrained and enabled human activity. This integrated perspective is particularly valuable in fields that deal with heritage, conservation, climate and land use, where historical depth and geographical understanding reinforce one another.

Graduates go on to careers in archaeology, heritage management, environmental consultancy, cultural resource management, geographic information systems, conservation, planning, museums and education. Some go on to postgraduate study in archaeology, environmental sciences, historical geography or related fields, including fieldwork-intensive doctoral research. The combination of analytical rigour, fieldwork competence and the ability to work with complex spatial and temporal data is valued across a range of professional environments.
