Archaeology/Theology & Religious Studies

Archaeology and theology and religious studies are disciplines that share a fundamental preoccupation with the human past, but they approach it through different lenses. Archaeology recovers that past through its material traces, the objects, buildings, landscapes, and sites that people left behind, using physical evidence to reconstruct how communities lived, believed, and organised themselves. Theology and religious studies examine the beliefs, texts, and institutions through which human beings have sought to understand the sacred and to organise communal moral and spiritual life.

Together they offer a uniquely grounded approach to the history of religion and culture, one that connects ideas and texts to the material realities of the people who held and produced them.

At Glasgow, this four-year programme develops both disciplines to honours level. In archaeology, you will study the methods and theories of the discipline, from excavation and artefact analysis to landscape survey and digital recording, alongside substantive knowledge of particular periods and places. In theology and religious studies, you will examine the world's major religious traditions, biblical and other sacred texts, the philosophy of religion, and the history of Christian and other religious thought.

The two subjects come together most naturally in areas such as the archaeology of religious sites, the study of ancient Israel and early Christianity, and the material dimensions of ritual and belief. A year abroad is built into the programme.

Graduates go on to work in heritage organisations, museums, archaeological practices, religious institutions, education, and academic research. The combination of material analysis and textual scholarship is particularly valuable in contexts involving ancient and early medieval religion, and Glasgow's research strengths in both fields make its graduates well regarded in competitive postgraduate programmes and professional settings.
