About this course

Architecture is one of the oldest creative disciplines, shaping the environments in which people live, work, and gather. It combines artistic vision with structural logic, asking how buildings and spaces can be both functional and meaningful. Good architecture responds to its social context, its physical environment, and the needs of the people who inhabit it, which is why studying architecture means engaging with history, culture, sustainability, and technology alongside drawing and design.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year BA programme approaches architecture as both a creative act and a social force. You will develop a design sensibility that is critically informed and responsive to real-world challenges, exploring how architecture can reshape places, reflect identities, and strengthen communities. Studio work is central to the course, and you will spend substantial time developing design proposals that are tested, critiqued, and refined through peer review and tutor feedback.

This iterative process mirrors professional practice and builds the resilience and reflective judgment that architecture demands. The course includes the opportunity for a year abroad, allowing you to encounter different architectural traditions, urban forms, and construction cultures, broadening your understanding of what architecture can be and mean in different contexts.

Alongside design studios, you will study the technical dimensions of architecture including structure, materials, and environmental performance, as well as the history and theory of the built environment. You will learn to communicate ideas through drawing, modelling, and digital tools, and to articulate your design decisions with clarity and confidence.

This BA is typically the first stage in a longer architectural education. Graduates usually go on to a Part 2 qualification before completing their professional practice year and final examination. The skills developed, including design thinking, technical drawing, spatial reasoning, and project management, also transfer into related fields such as urban design, landscape architecture, interior design, and construction project management.

Genuinely worthwhile

A great decision
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: critique sessions are tough but push your work to the next level. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is…
