Architecture
Architecture is one of the most demanding and rewarding of the design disciplines, concerned with creating built environments that are functional, beautiful, sustainable, and meaningful. Architects must understand the behaviour of structures and materials, master the tools of representation and design, engage with planning and regulatory frameworks, and think carefully about how buildings affect the people who inhabit and encounter them. The discipline draws on engineering, art history, environmental science, and social theory, making it genuinely interdisciplinary in its foundations.
At the University of Lincoln, this part-time degree is set within a city whose layered history, from Roman foundations through medieval cathedral and castle to Victorian expansion and contemporary development, provides an unusually rich context for learning about how architecture relates to heritage, place, and time. You will develop skills in design, drawing, modelling, and digital representation alongside your understanding of architectural history and theory, structural and environmental principles, and the social and cultural dimensions of the built environment. A placement or work experience year is built into the programme, and a year abroad is also available, both of which deepen your professional experience and broaden your understanding of architectural culture and practice.
You will learn to think spatially and materially, to evaluate precedents and develop original ideas, and to communicate design thinking through a range of media. The part-time structure allows you to balance demanding studio work with other commitments.
Graduates from the undergraduate stage of architectural education typically progress to postgraduate study, which is required for professional registration as an architect with the Architects Registration Board. The careers open to architecture graduates extend well beyond practice itself, into urban design, planning, conservation, project management, interior design, and the broader construction and property sectors.
