Architecture

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and the environments in which people live, work, and gather. It is one of the most socially meaningful of all the creative disciplines, because architecture shapes everyday experience in ways that few other arts can. At its best, architecture responds to human need, environmental context, and cultural meaning simultaneously, producing spaces and structures that are beautiful, functional, and durable.

The discipline is technically demanding, creatively ambitious, and deeply concerned with ethics and sustainability.

At the University of Nottingham this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year option, providing additional preparation for those entering from a broader range of backgrounds. You will develop skills in architectural design, drawing and representation, structural and environmental principles, the history and theory of architecture, and the professional knowledge needed to begin practice. Nottingham's strong research culture in architecture, sustainability, and building performance informs the academic content of the degree.

You will develop design thinking, the ability to communicate spatial ideas through drawing, model-making, and digital tools, and the critical and contextual knowledge to situate your work in its historical, environmental, and social context. Architecture education develops a particular capacity for integrative thinking that is genuinely rare.

Part 1 of the architecture qualification, which is the typical outcome of this degree, is the first step on the path to becoming an architect. Graduates go on to further study at Part 2, then professional training and Part 3 assessment. Many also pursue careers in urban design, landscape architecture, heritage conservation, project management, and the built environment more broadly.

Postgraduate study in architecture is the expected route to full professional qualification.
