Art History and Biblical Studies

Art History and Biblical Studies is an intellectually rich pairing that brings together the critical examination of visual culture with the scholarly study of one of the most significant and influential bodies of texts in human history. Art history trains you to analyse images, objects and built environments with rigour, situating them within their historical, institutional and cultural contexts and asking how visual works produce meaning and value. Biblical studies engages with the texts of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament as literary, historical and theological documents, examining their composition, reception and the diverse interpretive traditions they have generated.

Together they offer a particularly powerful lens on the visual art, architecture and material culture that has been shaped by religious traditions and scriptural imagery across centuries.

At the University of St Andrews this four-year full-time degree develops your capacity for visual analysis and art historical interpretation alongside your engagement with biblical texts in their historical and literary dimensions. You will learn to analyse the history, context, style and meaning of images and objects, developing visual literacy and engaging with different critical and theoretical frameworks. Your biblical studies work will develop your close reading skills and your understanding of how texts have been interpreted and applied across very different historical and cultural contexts.

The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your studies internationally.

Graduates from Art History and Biblical Studies degrees go on to careers in museums, galleries, heritage organisations, cultural publishing, education, chaplaincy, religious education, arts administration and theology. The analytical skills and visual and textual literacy the degree develops transfer well across the creative and cultural sectors, as well as into roles in education, the civil service and research.
