Art History and French
Art history and French is a combination with a natural intellectual coherence that is rarely available at this level of depth anywhere else. France has been one of the most significant centres of visual art in the Western tradition, from the Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance châteaux through the Impressionists and the School of Paris to the twentieth-century avant-gardes and the contemporary art scene of today. Studying art history in combination with French means engaging with the visual culture of one of the most important national traditions in Western art in its original linguistic context, developing the ability to read primary sources, scholarship, and contemporary criticism in the language in which much of that tradition was produced and debated.
At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree with a year abroad provides a thorough grounding in a modern European language and culture alongside the study of art, architecture, and curatorial practice across a wide range of media and techniques. You will develop your French to a high level through intensive language study and cultural engagement, alongside the visual analysis, historical research, and critical writing skills that art history demands. Graduates with art history and French are exceptionally well prepared for careers in museums, galleries, auction houses, cultural heritage, arts publishing, and arts administration in both the UK and the French-speaking world. The combination of visual literacy, historical knowledge, and genuine French language competence is particularly valued in institutions with international collections and partnerships, including major museums, the art market, international cultural organisations, and French and Francophone cultural institutions. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in art history, museum studies, French or Francophone studies, or curatorial practice, building the specialist expertise needed for curatorial and academic careers.
