Art History and Language

Art history and language is a combination that recognises how deeply the study of visual art is enriched by the ability to engage with other cultures in their own terms. Art history addresses the visual arts as a central element of human endeavour, developing skills in critical thinking, historical analysis, and visual interpretation that illuminate how images, objects, and spaces carry meaning across time and place. A modern language, whether French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, adds the capacity to access cultural traditions in their original languages and to understand artistic contexts from the inside rather than always through translation.

At Birkbeck College, this part-time programme is designed to be studied while you work, making it genuinely accessible to those who cannot pursue full-time study. You will develop a range of key skills, from critical thinking and writing through to historical research and visual analysis, enriched by the study of your chosen language. The programme covers a wide range of periods, movements, and artistic traditions, giving you the historical breadth and critical depth to engage with art as a global phenomenon rather than a narrowly defined canon.

Graduates with this combination of art historical knowledge and language competence are well placed for careers in galleries, museums, auction houses, arts journalism and criticism, cultural diplomacy, publishing, education, and the international art market. The transferable skills the degree develops, including research, visual analysis, and writing, are valued in communications, heritage, and media roles more broadly. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in art history, curating, cultural studies, or language and area studies.
