About this course

Artificial intelligence and data science are two of the most consequential fields in contemporary technology, and the distinction between them is increasingly fluid. Data science provides the tools to collect, process, and extract insight from large and complex datasets, using statistical methods, machine learning, and visualisation. Artificial intelligence builds on this foundation, developing systems that can perceive, reason, and act in ways that previously required human intelligence.

Together they underpin the technologies reshaping healthcare, finance, transport, communication, and scientific research.

At Middlesex, this part-time programme allows you to develop expertise in both fields while managing other commitments. A foundation year is available for students who need additional grounding in mathematics or computing before the main programme begins. You will study the core principles of machine learning, neural networks, statistical modelling, data engineering, and AI system design, developing both the conceptual understanding and the practical programming and analytical skills needed to work in these fields professionally.

A sandwich year and a work placement are built into the programme, providing professional experience alongside academic study and the opportunity to apply your skills in real industry or research environments.

Graduates with expertise in AI and data science are in exceptional demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Roles in data science, machine learning engineering, AI product development, research, business intelligence, and technology consultancy are all natural destinations. The part-time route is particularly suited to people who are already working in technology-adjacent roles and want to develop their skills and credentials without leaving employment.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or doctoral research in areas at the frontier of AI and data science.
