About this course

Artificial intelligence and robotics represent two of the most rapidly advancing and consequential technologies of our time. AI provides the algorithms and mathematical frameworks that allow machines to perceive, reason, and learn from data, while robotics concerns the design and construction of physical systems that can interact with the world. Their convergence is producing autonomous devices and systems that are transforming manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and many other sectors.

Studying both together means developing not only the technical skills to build these systems but also the understanding of the ethical responsibilities that their creation and deployment entails.

This three-year full-time degree at Sheffield Hallam University is built around practice-based learning, ensuring that you develop your skills by building and working with real AI and robotic systems throughout your studies. A foundation year is included, providing the mathematical and programming foundations needed before the main programme, and the degree incorporates a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional experience in a field where hands-on competence is highly valued. You will learn to develop smart robotic devices, to apply AI techniques to real-world problems, and to think critically about the ethical and social implications of autonomous systems.

The typical entry tariff is 88 points.

Graduates from AI and robotics programmes are among the most sought-after in the technology sector. Roles in robotics engineering, automation systems design, machine learning, computer vision, and autonomous systems development are available across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare technology, defence, and consumer electronics. Many graduates also work in AI research and development, and the practical emphasis of this programme means they typically enter the workforce with strong hands-on credentials.

Postgraduate study in AI, robotics, or computer science is a natural continuation.
