About this course

Artificial intelligence is reshaping almost every domain of human activity, from how diseases are diagnosed and how financial markets operate to how languages are translated and how autonomous vehicles navigate the world. Understanding AI at a technical level, not just its outputs but its underlying mechanisms, is one of the most valuable things a university education can now offer. This three-year programme at Bristol teaches you to both understand and build AI systems, drawing on one of the UK's leading research environments in computer science and machine learning.

You will develop a strong grounding in the mathematical and computational foundations of AI, covering areas such as machine learning, neural networks, probabilistic reasoning, optimisation, and algorithm design. The programme introduces you to the ways AI is applied in areas including healthcare, finance, environmental modelling, and robotics, giving real-world context to the technical material you are studying. Bristol's faculty includes world-class researchers who are actively developing new AI methods, and the teaching draws directly on that research activity.

A foundation year is available for students who need additional grounding before entering the main course. Throughout, you will develop the ability to think critically about what AI systems can and cannot do, and about the ethical and social implications of deploying them at scale.
