About this course

Astrophysics investigates the nature and behaviour of the universe beyond the Earth, applying the laws of physics to understand stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter and the origins and evolution of the cosmos itself. It is a discipline that demands genuine mathematical ability and physical intuition, combining observation and theory to address some of the most profound questions that science can pose. At Swansea University, this three-year full-time BSc develops your skills in analytical reasoning, mathematical problem-solving and scientific enquiry, working from the quantum physics of subatomic particles through stellar physics and galactic dynamics to cosmology and the large-scale structure of the universe.

You will study classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and special relativity as foundations before moving into the core of astrophysics: stellar structure and evolution, the interstellar medium, galaxy formation, observational techniques including spectroscopy and photometry, and the current frontiers of cosmological understanding. Mathematical methods run through the curriculum, developing the computational and analytical fluency that research in the physical sciences demands. Laboratory work and data analysis exercises develop practical skills alongside the theoretical content.

A typical entry tariff of around 104 points makes this programme accessible, though the content is mathematically demanding and rewards diligent preparation.

Astrophysics graduates are valued for their quantitative and analytical skills across sectors well beyond astronomy itself. Careers in data science, financial modelling, technology, medical physics, scientific computing and research are all within reach, in addition to the more obvious path into observational astronomy and space science. Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study, including MSc programmes in astrophysics, cosmology or data science, and a significant number go on to doctoral research.

The UK's role in major international observatories and space missions means that astrophysics continues to produce opportunities for those with the relevant training.
